The aged receivable
in Odoo
Before you chase anyone, one question: who owes you money, and for how long? The aged receivable answers it in a single screen. It's already in your Odoo, free, and it's probably the report you should open first thing every Monday.
You'll find it under Accounting → Reporting → Aged Receivable. On the customer side that's the receivable; there's a supplier equivalent, the Aged Payable, to see what you owe. The idea is the same both ways: Odoo takes everything that's open and sorts it by age.
The result fits in a table: one row per party, columns that slice the debt into age buckets. Nothing clever, but read well, this report tells you where the risk is in ten seconds.
Reading the table without getting it wrong
Each column is an age bucket of the amount due, usually 0 to 30 days, 30 to 60, 60 to 90, then over 90. The reading rule is simple: the further right an amount sits, the older it is, so the riskier. An example says it better than a paragraph:
| Customer | 0-30 d | 30-60 d | 60-90 d | 90+ d | Total due |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Durand Ltd | 4,200 | — | — | — | 4,200 |
| Martel & Co | 1,100 | 3,800 | — | — | 4,900 |
| Novak Studio | — | — | 900 | 7,500 | 8,400 |
| Total | 5,300 | 3,800 | 900 | 7,500 | 17,500 |
Three ways to actually use it
1. Prioritise your dunning
That's the number-one use. You cross age with amount and out comes your call list for the day. A large customer at 90 days comes before three small ones at 40. It keeps whoever does the chasing from spreading themselves thin.
2. Spot a customer drifting
A regular who always paid at 30 days and suddenly slips into the 60-90 bucket: that's a signal. Sometimes an unspoken dispute, sometimes trouble. Better to pick up the phone early than to discover the bad debt three months later.
3. Track the trend over time
Freeze the date, export to Excel, and compare month over month. If the "90+ days" column swells, your receivables are deteriorating, however healthy your revenue looks. It's one of the best warning signals around, and it's already sitting in Odoo.
What the aged receivable will never tell you
It's a snapshot. Useful for the past and present, silent on the future.
The aged receivable, alone
- Shows the lateness already built up
- Doesn't say when each invoice will be collected
- Ignores invoices not yet due
- No projection of your cash balance
- A frozen export, to redo every time
With Dafodoo + Odoo
- Lateness and upcoming collections together
- Each due date projected day by day
- Cash low point and alerts
- Dunning triggered from the right overdue amounts
- Always up to date, no re-export
The aged receivable tells you what's late. To know when the money lands, your payment terms set the tempo, and Dafodoo turns the whole thing into a cash-flow forecast.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the aged receivable in Odoo?
In Accounting → Reporting → Aged Receivable (Aged Payable on the supplier side). Odoo splits the amounts due into age buckets, usually 0-30, 30-60, 60-90 and over 90 days, with the detail per party.
How do I read an aged receivable report?
Each row is a customer, each column an age bucket of the debt. The further right an amount, the older, so the riskier. Look at the "90+ days" column and the largest amounts first: those are your dunning priorities.
What is the difference with the partner ledger?
The partner ledger lists every movement for a customer. The aged receivable is a lateness-oriented summary: it groups balances by age so you can see at a glance who pays late and by how much. To steer collections, it's more direct.
Can I export the aged receivable?
Yes, to PDF or Excel, with the option to freeze an analysis date. Comparing the aged receivable month over month is a good way to see whether your customer lateness is getting worse or improving.
Is the aged receivable enough to forecast cash flow?
No: it's a snapshot at a date, showing lateness already built up but not when each invoice will be collected or your upcoming balance. Timing comes from your payment terms, and the day-by-day projection from Dafodoo.
